All Saints Sunday Worship
“And the Spirit of God Moved on the Face of the Waters” - Ivan Aivazovsky
All Saints Sunday at Annandale UMC
Today we remember our saints, the beloved church members who have passed away in the last year. We will light a candle and ring a bell in honor of each saint, as their photo is shown on a slide and their name is spoken.
Peter will give the sermon, drawing from Romans 15:14-21, 30-33. These verses speak of the importance of spreading the Word: “Those who have never been told of him shall see, and those who have never heard of him shall understand.”
Our bell choir, the Annanbells, will chime out “Come, Thou Fount of Ev’ry Blessing,” “Pie Jesu (Requiem)” and “The Gift of Grace” at worship this morning. Jeanne Crowley will join in on flute during “The Gift of Grace,” as well as accompanying the Adult Choir for “The Dwelling Place of God.” We will also sing “For All the Saints” and “Come, Let Us Join Our Friends Above” from the hymnal.
Please join us in Wright Hall following the service for fellowship hour. Thanks to the Steps in Faith class for hosting this week, and to the Annandale Book Lovers for hosting last week. Next week’s hosts will be the Mission Center Committee. If you are willing to help with fellowship hour, email Richard Bass at rbass@annandale-umc.org .

Jason will not be here to lead his normal Sunday morning free-for-all discussion today, although anyone who wishes to meet and chat without him is welcome! He is currently traveling to perform a wedding; he will be back by next Sunday.
Flowers on the altar are offered to the glory of God and in honor of David King’s 27th birthday by his parents, Patricia Millett and Robert King.
To reserve flowers for the altar in memory or honor of a loved one on Sundays for $30, contact helanko@annandale-umc.org, 703-256-8330, ext. 100. Flowers may be taken home after worship or left for shut-in members.
Order of Worship
Prelude: “Come, Thou Fount of Ev’ry Blessing” - arr. Moklebust; Annanbells
Invocation
Leader: We gather in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
All: Amen.
Confession
Leader: Scripture attests that if we say we have no sin, then we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
All: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole hearts; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.
Absolution
Leader: Almighty God in his mercy has given us his Son to die for you and on account of Christ forgives all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by his authority alone, I declare unto you the entire forgiveness of all your sins in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Enjoy your forgiveness!
Opening Hymn: “For All the Saints” - Hymnal #711, vs. 1, 2, 4, and 6
For all the saints, who from their labors rest,
Who thee by faith before the world confessed,
Thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest.
Alleluia, Alleluia!
Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might;
Thou Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight;
Thou in the darkness drear, their one true light.
Alleluia, Alleluia!
O blest communion, fellowship divine!
We feebly struggle, they in glory shine;
Yet all are one in thee, for all are thine.
Alleluia, Alleluia!
From earth's wide bounds, from ocean's farthest coast,
Through gates of pearl streams in the countless host,
Singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost:
Alleluia, Alleluia!
Collect
Almighty God, You have knit together Your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical Body of Your Son: Give us grace so to follow Your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that You have prepared for those who truly love You; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting . Amen

Offertory: “Pie Jesu (REQUIEM)” - arr. Sanders; Annanbells
Doxology: United Methodist Hymnal #94
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise him, all creatures here below;
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Praise God, the source of all our gifts!
Praise Jesus Christ, whose power uplifts!
Praise the Spirit, Holy Spirit
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
Prayer of Dedication
Our Father, accept these gifts of our commitment. Use the money to work your good will for the world. Let your Spirit hallow our work just as you hallow the bread and the wine; that in the use for which we bring them, they may be true signs of your gift of new life to us, and of our offering to you of our bodies and hopes.
As the grain was scattered upon the mountains and is gathered into one loaf, gather your church from the corners of earth to your one kingdom. And as the cup is one cup poured for all, pour us out as one gift to the world. In his name who is your gift and our hope, to be one God with you and the Spirit we here invoke, now and forever. Amen.

Scripture Reading: Romans 15:14-21; 30-33
14I myself feel confident about you, my brothers and sisters, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, and able to instruct one another. 15Nevertheless, on some points I have written to you rather boldly by way of reminder, because of the grace given me by God 16to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles in the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. 17In Christ Jesus, then, I have reason to boast of my work for God. 18For I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me to win obedience from the Gentiles, by word and deed, 19by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God, so that from Jerusalem and as far around as Illyricum I have fully proclaimed the good news of Christ. 20Thus I make it my ambition to proclaim the good news, not where Christ has already been named, so that I do not build on someone else’s foundation, 21but as it is written,
‘Those who have never been told of him shall see,
and those who have never heard of him shall understand.’30I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to join me in earnest prayer to God on my behalf, 31that I may be rescued from the unbelievers in Judea, and that my ministry to Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints, 32so that by God’s will I may come to you with joy and be refreshed in your company. 33The God of peace be with all of you. Amen.
The Apostles Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
Sermon: Rev. Peter Kwon

Leader: For the Lord is good;
All: His steadfast love endures for ever, and his faithfulness to all generations.

Prayer
Preface and Sanctus
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Leader: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them to the Lord.
Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Leader: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, almighty God, Creator of heaven and earth, God of Abraham and Sarah, God of Miriam and Moses, God of Joshua and Deborah, God of Ruth and David, God of the priests and the prophets, God of Mary and Joseph, God of the apostles and the martyrs, God of the mothers and our fathers, God of our children to all generations.
And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest!
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest!
[…]
All: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Closing Hymn: “Come, Let Us Join Our Friends Above” - Hymnal No. 709, vs. 1, 2 and 4
Come, let us join our friends above who have obtained the prize,
And on the eagle wings of love to joys celestial rise.
Let saints on earth unite to sing with those to glory gone,
For all the servants of our King in earth and heaven are one.
One family we dwell in him, one church above, beneath,
Though now divided by the stream, the narrow stream of death;
One army of the living God, to his command we bow;
Part of his host have crossed the flood, and part are crossing now.
Our spirits too shall quickly join, like theirs with glory crowned,
And shout to see our Captain's sign, to hear this trumpet sound.
O that we now might grasp our Guide! O that the word were given!
Come, Lord of Hosts, the waves divide, and land us all in heaven.
Blessing
